Before any team building intervention occurs team members are asked:
“What gets in the way of this being a productive team?”
“What do you think will help to make things better?”
These questions help issues surface and allow us to put the issues into a positive and hopeful context.
To give one example of that process:
A number of teams experience conflict between the “old timers” and the “new kids on the block”. What many of them do not realize is that tensions between old and new are a normal part of change.
When change is not handled supportively, the “founders” get the feeling that everything they have done to build the organization is being invalidated by new people pressing for change.
Or the "new kids" start to feel unmotivated and ignored.
Understanding how to manage change can help to heal this polarization so that both factions can move forward together.
Identifying the team issues makes developing an effective team easier. Once the issues are identified, the team can meet together to start looking at ways to make things better.
